The World Data Center-A for Paleoclimatology archive contains a growing
umber paleoenvironmental datasets. Table 1 lists current data holdings
followed by a brief description, and identifies datasets received or
updated since the beginning of the year. Access and retrieval of these
data over the toll-free electronic information highway has continued at
a high pace over the last year, averaging 300 individuals per month from
over 25 countries. As the database matures, we are formalizing
guidelines for the types of "metadata" (peripheral data or information
about the dataset) that are necessary to ensure accurate documentation
of archived data. Table 2 provides a preliminary list of the range of
information that has proven useful in generating documentation files.
Identification of "key" data sets not currently archived as well as
comments on the list of metadata are welcome from the international
paleoclimatology community. We encourage you to contact the data center
with comments or questions on how to archive data. E-mail:
paleo@mail.ngdc.noaa.gov;
phone: 303 497 6227; fax: 303 497 6513.
