A feature of the program is the ability to locate the elements of one core relative to the other, so in principle it is possible to derive the depth scale of one core (B) in terms of known depths in core A. Version 1.7 has the option of running under batch mode. This is particularly useful when you want to run PCSLOT repeatedly, for example doing the same analysis on many different sets of data, or doing repeated analysis on the same data. In batch mode, you make a simple change to the control file, and supply the name of that file when invoking PCSLOT. The program then runs automatically without prompting for file names or other interactive options. For complete instructions, read the READ.ME file. See: Clark, Malcolm. 1992. It actually covers a much larger area (50 to 72 N Lat and from 6 W to 32 E). The SITESCAN.TXT file can be edited and changed by the user so that it can show any site one wishes within this geographic area. SITESCAN.BAS AND SITESCAN.EXE work with an IBM PC with a VGA screen. An EGA screen version is available; check with L.J. Maher: maher@geology.wisc.edu. The things this program could do are better handled by John Keltner's MapPad, which is described above. The self-extracting zipped file SITSCANZ.EXE contains the following files: READ .ME Information file on Sitescan. SITESCAN.BAS 34068 18Jul94 QuickBasic version for VGA. SITESCAN.BAK 7830 17JUL94 Backup copy of SITESCAN.TXT in case you need it. ------------------------------ SLOTDEEP--Program of L.J. Maher. This program is an extension of SLOTSEE for slotting two pollen diagrams together. It contains the same Gordon algorithm as SLOTSEE and calculates the same results in the automatic mode. However SLOTDEEP retains information about the sample stratigraphy and plots the pollen samples at their correct depth rather than simply in serial order--hence the title SLOTDEEP. The matrix of dissimilarity coefficients also retains the samples' depth separation. The user has the option of using the dissimilarity matrix to correlate the two diagrams manually. The first pollen site loaded is considered the SUBORDINATE site about which less is known; the better known PRINCIPAL site is loaded second. The cursor cross-hair can be placed on the matrix where the best match is perceived, and a copy of the cross-hair anchored at that position. When two or more points of correlation are established, a line can be fit to the matrix--either by cubic splines or by linear segments. The resulting sequence can be viewed as the two pollen diagrams slotted together to judge the success of the correlation. The user has the option of saving the result to disk; the two diagrams' depth sequences are plotted side by side with the subordinate site's samples plotted in the depth units of the principal site but also with their original depths as labels. The user also has the option of making a work copy of the subordinate site's file wherein the samples' depths are converted to their equivalents in the principal site. The program requires color graphics and is supplied in versions for either the EGA (v. 1.5) or VGA (v. 1.9) graphic screen. (The EGA version is named SLOTDEPE to differentiate it from the VGA version; SLOTDEPE can be renamed SLOTDEEP when it is extracted. The EGA version 1.5 is no longer routinely being up-graded.) The self- extracting zipped files contain several sample demonstration files made with Maher's POLFILE and MAK_INF. It is designed to control a RS-232-C equipped electronic balance by an IBM compatible computer, specifically to determine sediment-sample volume, wet weight, dry weight, and water content of samples taken from a sediment core with a calibrated spoon. SPOON-EZ.BAS works with QBASIC (found in DOS >= 5.0) or QuickBASIC. It was originally used with a Denver Instrument XE Series Model 100A (sold by Fisher Scientific), but its code can be adapted easily to other electronic balances that have bi-directional RS-232-C ports. See INQUA-Commission for the Study of the Holocene, Working Group on Data-Handling Methods Newsletter 10:27-30, July 1993. The site files contain the same information as the ASCII summary tables of the 'Top 50 Taxa' which the National Geophysical Data Center distributes in its pollen file called FOS_T50.ZIP. See INQUA-Commission for the Study of the Holocene, Working Group on Data-Handling Methods Newsletter 9:10-12, January 1993. I have converted these files to the 'Wisconsin *.RAW Format' which allows them to be imported directly into Eric C. Grimm's TILIA. They can be read directly by my POLFILE.EXE and converted to *.DAT files for use with PLOTSITE, SLOTSEE, SLOTDEEP, or they can be output in a format that can be read by Warren L. Kovach's MultiVariate Statistical Package: MVSP. The 293 ASCII files in FOS_T50.ZIP begin with a header, followed by a list of the taxa and their raw counts. In the conversion of the *.T50 files to *.RAW files, the list of taxa is moved after the pollen numbers; only the full taxon names are used (except that a few which are VERY long are abbreviated), and the original *.T50 file headers are appended at the end. As an example, the header for DEVILSWI.T50 which was appended to DEVILSWI.RAW is reproduced below (The lines indicated by '*' were added during the conversion): *# Source: # NAPD ASCII Format # 07 Jan 93 # Top 50 Pollen Types # # Site name: Devils Lake [Wisconsin] # Place: USA:Wisconsin # Latitude: 43.25.00 # Longitude: -89.44.00 # Elevation(m): 294 # Contact person: Maher, L.J., Jr. # Chron name: COHMAP chron# 2 *# Latitude Degrees: 43.41667 *# Longitude Degrees: -89.73333 *# AGE ESTIMATES ARE LINEAR APPROXIMATIONS USING SELECTED DATES; *# CONSULT ORIGINAL DATES AND STRATIGRAPHY FOR CRITICAL WORK. *# Converted to WISCONSIN *.RAW format with NAPD2RAW: 02-08-1993 Most of the files have age estimates for each level. I have reproduced these as 'Est.Age(BP)', and also added a category 'Est.Age(BP)Decades)'. When *.DAT files are made with POLFILE.EXE, substituting 'Est.Age(BP)Decades)' for 'Depth(cm)' will allow PLOTSITE.EXE's depth ticks to indicate time in 1000's of years BP. The conversion resulted in a reduced storage requirement. The original uncompressed *.T50 files total 4,018,548 bytes whereas the *.RAW files total 1,505,608 bytes. T50RAW.EXE is a self-extracting file. Typing its name will cause it to unzip all its files. You can retrieve the files selectively. For example typing ' T50RAW e*.raw p*.raw ' will extract all the files with extension 'RAW' that begin with 'E' and 'P'.) ------------------------------ TABSTATZ.EXE--A self-extracting zipped file providing a program by L.
