AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF NUMERICAL METHODS IN QUATERNARY POLLEN ANALYSIS 1985-1989 by H. J. B. BIRKS HAZEL JUGGINS MAGNE S’TERSDAL Botanical Institute, University of Bergen, Allegaten 41, N-5007 Bergen, Norway. 1990 Introduction This bibliography lists all publications on the application of numerical methods and quantitative approaches to Quaternary pollen analysis that we have seen and that have either appeared in the 5-year period 1985-1989 or are not listed in the bibliography of H. J. B. Birks and A. D. Gordon's (1985) Numerical Methods in Quaternary Pollen Analysis (Academic Press). The bibliography in that book plus this one provides, we hope, a representative cross-section of the ever-increasing literature of Quaternary pollen analytical studies that involve quantitative techniques. Our bibliography attempts to cover all Quaternary palynological applications of statistical methods and quantitative techniques, as well as new quantitative procedures of direct or potential applicability to Quaternary pollen analysis. Relevant papers from pre-Quaternary palynology, from diatom-based palaeolimnology, and from plant-macrofossil studies are also included, but no attempt at completeness has been made for these topics. Besides pollen-stratigraphical and surface-sample studies, we have tried to include relevant references on image analysis, automated counting, error estimation, mapping and spatial analysis, scale, compositional data analysis, constrained ordinations, aerobiology, and new, relevant statistical developments, particularly those that deal explicitly with data in temporal or spatial sequences or data expressed as percentages. We include 660 entries listed aphabetically by first author. Each reference is numbered, and each publication is indexed in terms of 61 topics that serve as index entries for the bibliography such as spatial analysis, correspondence analysis, pollen mapping, and image analysis. In addition, the various topics that each publication covers is shown in brackets after each reference. We wish to thank Steve Juggins for his advice in the production of the bibliography, the many colleagues who have sent us offprints of their publications, and the ever-patient staff of the University of Bergen library who have helped to trace many publications not available locally. Publication of this bibliography as a Report from the Botanical Institute, University of Bergen has been possible with financial support from the Olaf Grolle Olsens Legat. A machine-readable copy of the bibliography is available as a Word Perfect 5.1 file on diskette at nominal cost. We would naturally be most grateful to readers who draw our attention to any errors or omissions. November 1990 H. J. B.
