Northern wetland soil carbon - West Siberia

The West Siberia Lowland – The low-lying, flat basin between the Ural Mountains and the Yenisey River in Siberia - is the world’s largest lowland and one of the world’s great terrestrial carbon pools in the form of wetlands and peat. This project, a collaborative effort between UCLA and the Russian Academy of Sciences, has provided important new information on the extent, carbon storage, and history of peatlands across this globally significant region.

What role have northern peatlands played in CO2 and CH4 variations in the past?
